Introduction

King Parakramabahu II belonged to the Sirisangabo Dynasty and was the eldest son of the previous King Vijayabahu III. He ruled the Maya country for a long period from 1236 CE to 1270 CE, making him an important king of the Dambadeniya era in Sri Lankan history. King Parakramabahu II brought the Sacred Tooth Relic from Beligala to Dambadeniya and held a magnificent Tooth Relic offering ceremony. He also pledged before the public to liberate the country from Magha. Being highly proficient in subjects such as language, literature, and religious doctrine, he was a great scholar.
