The Indo-Sri Lankan Peace Accord was signed on July 29, 1987, between Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and Sri Lankan President J.R. Jayewardene. The accord aimed to resolve the civil war through devolution of power to provinces, merger of Northern and Eastern provinces, and official status for Tamil. The Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) was deployed to maintain peace, but the LTTE refused to cooperate. The IPKF soon became engaged in heavy fighting with the LTTE, resulting in over 1,165 Indian soldiers killed during the 32-month deployment.
