Introduction
King Parakramabahu V was a renowned ruler who governed the Gampola Kingdom from CE 1344 or 1345 to 1359. He was the second king of the Gampola Kingdom and played a unique role in the contemporary political situation. His reign is considered an important milestone in the Gampola era.
Early Life and Accession to Power
King Parakramabahu V was born in 1311. He jointly ruled the Gampola Kingdom with his brother King Bhuvanekabahu IV. The rule of these two belongs to the early period of the Gampola Kingdom. King Vikramabahu III was his nephew.
The Power of Minister Senadhilankara
A prominent feature of King Parakramabahu V’s reign was the immense power of the minister named Senadhilankara. As pointed out by Professor Senarath Paranavithana, this minister had become more powerful than the king himself. There is also a view that Senadhilankara was connected to a South Indian lineage. This situation likely posed a significant challenge to the king’s independent rule.
Reign
King Parakramabahu V’s reign was politically complex. He led administrative affairs jointly with his brother Bhuvanekabahu IV and attempted to maintain stability in the Gampola Kingdom. Despite being under the influence of Minister Senadhilankara, he was dedicated to fulfilling his royal responsibilities. However, historical information indicates that the minister exerted excessive power over his rule.
Final Period
The end of King Parakramabahu V’s reign was tragic. After his domain was invaded, he had to abandon his kingdom. Subsequently, he spent his final days as a refugee in the Ruhuna province. This clearly demonstrates the instability and political challenges that prevailed during the latter part of his reign.
