Introduction
King Mahinda V is recorded in history as the last ruler of the Anuradhapura Kingdom. His reign, as the brother of King Sena V, was marked by weak governance, economic difficulties, and the influence of the South Indian Chola Empire.
Reign and Challenges
It is mentioned that King Mahinda V was a weak ruler. During his reign, both the military strength and the economy of the kingdom significantly weakened. As a result, the royal treasury is reported to have become empty.
Due to the excessive taxes imposed by the king, public support for him rapidly diminished. Often, people began to evade tax payments. This situation further exacerbated the king’s financial difficulties.
Chola Invasion and the Fall of the Kingdom
King Mahinda V’s weak rule and the decline of the kingdom drew the attention of the Cholas, who were then building a powerful empire in South India, towards Sri Lanka.
The Chola Emperor Rajaraja invaded Lanka during the reign of King Mahinda V. This invasion resulted in the killing of King Mahinda V and the usurpation of the Anuradhapura Kingdom’s throne. This marked the end of the Anuradhapura Kingdom and the beginning of a new chapter in Sri Lankan history.
Legacy
The reign of King Mahinda V is considered the end of the Anuradhapura era in Sri Lankan history. His weak rule, economic crises, and ultimately the Chola invasion directly contributed to the collapse of the kingdom. For these reasons, he is remembered as a king who marked a turning point in Lanka’s history, yet faced an unfortunate fate.
